Sun, sand, and Akhal-Tekes

Me riding the fabulous Akhal-Teke stallion Gerald. He’s giving me instruction (with help from his person, Katrina Ardiel) on flying changes. It had been around 30 years since I’d done one, but it was well worth the wait.

Recently, (back in February, before all this quarantine stuff happened), my husband, Larry and I, spent 8 days in sunny Florida, visiting with Teke friends, riding Tekes (me, not Larry), eating good seafood and enjoying the beach. My friend, Dean Miller, had set up an ‘Akhal-Teke Winter Camp’ at his farm, Black Prince Equestrian. He hosted a bunch of us Teke fanatics, including; Katrina and Giles Ardiel, who drove two trucks and trailers down from Ontario, Canada, Rachel Stevick, who brought her Teke mare Aldura with her.

Me and the lovely Teke mare, Aldura, bred by Greystone Equestrian Center, and owned by Rachel Stevick-Quires.

And, Cindy Sither and her husband Dennis, who brought 2 Tekes down from Kentucky. We didn’t get to visit very long, but it was great to see them.

After my flying changes ride (AWESOME!) Katrina asked me if I wanted to try anything else. Of course, I said YES! I have never done a complete canter pirouette, and Gerald very happily obliged.

Gerald showing me how to do Canter Pirouettes. Squee!

Besides Tekes (and a few horses of other breeds, lol), we also got in some beach time. It was just a bit too cold to get in the ocean above my knees (I’ve become a total wimp, no blue lips for me anymore), but we did get to lie in the sun some and Larry got to run on the beach. We drank quite a few Mojitos and Margaritas.

I also got to take a nice, Florida trail ride on Drogo, along with Rachel on Aldura and Katrina on Danville.

Dean threw a wonderful party on Saturday night, and we got to meet a bunch of his Florida friends. One night a bunch of us went to a fancy jumper show at Fox Lea Farms, but it was so chilly, we mostly huddled around the heaters and chatted. All in all, it was a wonderful vacation, especially as we got back before everything shut down.
