Breeding Season Accoutrements

Yes, I had to look up the spelling.

Anyway, after almost 30 years of ‘winging’ it, we’re finally getting a bit more professional with our breeding apparatus.  This is partly because I can finally afford it and partly because I have the man (or Jayson) power to get it done.

First, I bought the extra stocks from Pilchuck Vet Hospital.  They aren’t pretty, but they are very, VERY heavy.  Just getting them here was a whole blog in itself.

Yes, it took us about 4 weeks to get everything safely (and safety was a huge issue, this thing is HEAVY.) installed.  First, I had to pick it up from Pilchuck, then we had to unload it without a forklift, then we had to put a 4 x 8 sheet of wood with rubber mats under it, then it had to be positioned…quite the project!

Once the stocks were in place, we (or Jayson) did a teasing chute.  Our old teasing wall was falling down (literally) and was no longer safe.  I watched some videos online and designed a very nice, sturdy, safe teasing wall and a wall for the human to stand behind.  We put light rubber mats on it, so any kicks or strikes will have less potential for injury.  The mare handler stands behind the smaller wall, which has already proven to be very handy.  Our ‘beautiful wall’ is now Salam’s favorite place in his pasture.  He stands there for hours, waiting for his next assignment.

Maybe our next project will be a phantom.  We shall see!
